The Crisis in Book Review, an arts journalism conference Feb 2022

Day Eight is pleased to announce details of our upcoming annual arts journalism conference, set to occur February 22-26, 2022 and considering the topic of book review. The conference will gather critics, editors, publishers, authors, and literary community members for a series of workshops, panels, and keynote sessions. All conference events are free and open to the public. Because of the ongoing pandemic most conference events will be virtual.

Visit the conference web pages here for full details and registration links.

Confirmed keynote speakers include Joyce Carol Oates, Brian Broome, Russell Jacoby (UCLA), Jennifer Harlan (New York Times), E. Ethelbert Miller, Marita Golden, Gwydion Suilebhan (Pen/Faulkner), and Teri Cross Davis (Folger).

Confirmed conference workshop leaders include Stephanie Merry (Washington Post), Ron Charles (Washington Post), and Holly Smith (Washington Independent Review of Books).

There are five panel discussions scheduled, including two panels of local authors, two panels of reviewers, editors, and publishers, and a panel of student paper editors.

The conference includes a cohort of seven new book reviewers who will attend the conference with draft reviews of books by local authors. After the reviewers receive feedback at the conference and make their edits their reviews will be published by conference partners The DC Line and the Washington Independent Review of Books.

The conference is produced in partnership with The DC Line, Washington Independent Review of Books, and Tagg Magazine, and through support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
